if you look on stw , there is a cop from bristol who set up a web site with stolen bike in your area . he seems to get very good results at getting the bikes back

3rd down.

What an absolute *%*"^!! after all your fantastic ingenuity and effort.

It looks like there are some very discerning bike thieves in that neck of the woods. Quite a few of the bikes are unlikely to be used on the roads so I wonder if they are being followed home from local trail centres or are just opportunistically following cars with fancy bikes on the roof as they pass through the city?

Bristol has always had higher than average cycle theft over the years. It's a major centre for bikes, and mountain biking in particular. It was also Britain's first Cycling City, and the amount of cyclists is growing all the time. There are loads of trails very close to the heart of the city, and a short car journey away we've got some big hills. So combine that with a population with an above average income and you end up with a lot of nice bikes, and a lot of less than trustworthy people aware of the bike scene here, and the bikes that are worth stealing.

It's pretty hard to disguise the fact that you're a cyclist here, short of getting overly paranoid about being followed home or leaving the tell-tale signs everywhere - there are a lot of cars/vans with bike stickers plastered over them that often make me wonder.

Part of the problem is geography - areas of the city that are pretty plush sit right next to areas that are pretty rough - not that there aren't wrong 'uns in all areas, of course. It's difficult to go unnoticed here - I'm glad in a way that the 'Retro bikes you've seen lately' thread disappeared, Bristol's like a big village of almost half a million.

Thats good, i think though that the sentences need to be a real deterrent especially in the interest of encouraging people to cycle.
There are much more benefits to giving out bigger sentences (or sentences in the first place) than there are cons.
A knock on effect.

Stealing a bike from a public place is not in the same league as going into someone's home to steal one.

I can't see the logic of putting people in prison for such a thing, we really need to cut the prison population.

Community service would be more appropriate.

However, stealing a shite bike should be punishable by hanging.

I did think the prisons are full as it is, but community service and such is nothing to the vast majority of criminals.
Its a tricky one :?
