Stolen bicyle - first time for me.

Re:

do you want a free rummage in my shed?

Oooh-er, misses. :p

A very kind offer and much appreciated. I currently have my eye on something on Ebay which is local to me and would make a nice replacement, provided the price doesn't go too high. But, if that comes to nothing I might take you up on that.

Re:

hate bike thieves, this is probably one of the pettiest types of theft there is

but then unlocked bikes are so easy to get away with, especially when the lock is included free with the bike and not actually attached ;)

on the plus side, at least its worth £200 not £2000, so it could be a lot worse... i had a nice steel GT stolen on christmas eve 2008 so I'm sure i gave some pr*ck a nice xmas gift  i quickly went out and bought the toughest magnum chain halfords had to offer back then and to this day i still use it without fail and haven't had a bike nicked since, the previous lock was just a cheap wire jobby so lesson learned there

Tell you what purple frog.Your concrete idea is excellent. Shove some coils of fencing wire in there as well so it will hold together when they try and smash it.

Good idea. Most bike thieves are bottom feeders who only take what's easy; anything you can do to make their lives difficult sends them off to look for easier prey.

Indeed, this was my "cheap" bike, the one I was most prepared to lose and when I brush painted it grey, I deliberately picked a rather drab colour to limit its thief appeal. But apparently not quite enough. :(

I'm going to fit one of these to the wall, to ensure that the replacement doesn't go the same way: http://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/prod ... hor/738633

Re:

People will rob anything just because they can, and for the sake Of it being unlocked. Don't matter whether it's a kids bike or a primer grey commuter.

At least that's how it went where I grew up :p

Re:

I stole a bike once, by accident. I was drunk and had to get up to Harrow from Tooting Bec overnight for an early shift. Thought said bike was my friend's, she was in the habit of forgetting it at the pub so I assumed it was her's and rode it off. Next evening later I rode it back down to the pub expecting much mirth to find her bike parked in its usual spot.

Never traced the owner, so actually claimed it back from the police station and rode it for a couple of years.

I feel ashamed. Even though it was twenty seven years ago..

Re:

My shed has a big heavy chandler's chain wrapped around some angle iron concreted into the foundations. It still won't stop them, but thieves are generally quite lazy.

Still, that's rough. For commuting, I have a Raleigh shopper(no sniggering at the back). It rides ok, none of the little scrotes would be seen dead one one and it coat £2.20.

 And rightly so

Was lost in Amsterdam one very early morning. Stopped a drunk guy which is not something a Scotsman due to personal safety. He turned out to be a lawyer, knew where i needed to go and offered to get me there.
He then preceded to kick the lock off an Amsterdam special and gave me a lift to the hotel

Re:

Put a bid on a couple of suitable replacements on Ebay over the weekend and was feeling quite optimistic that I'd win at least one of them and was tentatively looking forward to getting a new bike. Didn't win either of them and feel miserable again now. :(
