Please help with my first poll... I've fitted 1 1/8" ahead star nuts successfully more then a few times in the past with an rusty top cap bolt and an old 11/16" socket... but that was on hacks... dare I use same technique on a carbon rigid fork - albeit with alloy steerer?

.

Top cap bolt, hammer and hope for the best. Always have a spare starnut handy when using this very dodgy method ;)

Just buy a head doctor and install and remove to your hearts content, easy. ;)

Why bother messing around for under £20.

Not having a go at anyone in particular but each week there's similar questions regarding tools. Most of us are talking about cherished and rare bicycles so unless you're only building one bike or it's a really expensive tool then why not go and buy the correct tool?

A Star Nut Installer is £12 and they take about 4 taps with a hammer to fit (unless if your feeling all medieval/caveman-ish/gung-ho, then you can do it in one hit )

Simplest and cheapest way must be with a bit of 5mm threaded rod from B&Q and some nuts and washers, fitted 3 in this way now and they always go in square and height adjustment is perfect.

Carl.
