Im getting a wheelset built up with Stans ZTR Crests. Is it necessary to use the sealant? Is there a cheaper alternative to Stans rim tape,it seems a bit pricy for what it is.Any tips on using tubes with these rims other than brute force and ignorance to get them on?

Sealant, yes. Unless you use full UST/tubeless, in which case you might have issues with the bead (AFAIK ztr relies on normal beads or tubeless ready beads, not full UST.)
There are alternative tapes (packing tape type stuff, gorilla tape "works" but I find it to be crap)
Tubes with ztr is as straight forward as any other rim. If you have your technique sorted (we've had UCI compliant, 33mm CX tyre, with tubes on a crest 29er. Which according to "internet guruz" is an impossible combination, they're running tubeless now)

But, running tubes on a ztr rim sort of defeats the purpose of spending 70 quid on a rim.......

Just go tubeless, you'll not regret it.

There is a yellow Tesa tape[4289], that's said to be the same. I use the tape as rim tape with my tubes tyres.
