Wanted ST-M739 Right Brifter

Hey folks

Just finished up my 96 Avalanche with a couple of upgrades. Only problem I have is the right shifter has a wobbly lever. It will only shift if the lever is pressed up towards the bars and even then it can slip.

Would anyone have a right brifter setup spare that has a tight lever feel and shifts nicely?

ST-M739 XT for Vbrakes

May… May take a set if the price is good enough but the right shifter is the important thing.

I’ll be using it as a retro race bike so I need precise shifting!

Sounds fixable -
if the ratchet mechanism bearing is loose, the pawl slips over the dog (if you know what i mean)unless you push the lever back into place.
(Equally if the grease is stiff, the pawl doesn't spring back fast enough so fails to engage in a downhift )

Could be as simple as removing the lower cover and tightening up the main nut (lh thread? I can't remember) and rinsing it through with disc brake cleaner to soften that 30 year old grease, then re-lubricate and see how it is.

Agreed - take the cap off for the cable entry, spray a load of WD40 in and leave an hour. Usually it magically starts working again.

I have actually already had them apart to give them a clean.

I did forget though…. The top cap covering the bolt had a stripped screw so I didn’t fully disassemble them. I’ve just drilled that screw out, popped off the cap and tried to tighten the nut but…. It just spins. It will unwind but won’t tighten. 🥲
