Sram Vs Shimano

Never used SRAM apart from the Gripshift as thier mechs were only just coming out when I stopped biking (we are talking Retro here are we not? I do see we are in the 'we only talk retro section'. No modern stuff allowed ;))
So Shimano for me but mainly I do have used (and still have) Suntour, but I wouldn't have gone out of my way to buy it BiTD.
Now Gripshift I do like :) especially as I only bought them to replace my M900 XTR RF+ when the RF+ shifter bit the death pretty quickly . Using it ever since and they are still going well...

I've never used sram either, but i think they are more available on a retail sold bikes nowadays.
But i dont think they'll ever overtake shimano on sales due to shimano cornering the low end and middle component markets

Im stuck in m739 land
:D happy though :D

I was using Shimano groupo with the SRAM shifter, but now that shimano has the double release leaver all good!
Although I don't think Shimano would know how to make a chain if SRAM gave them all there workers and machinery and said go for it....
Always run SRAM chains (well used to run Sachs chains till they got bought out by SRAM?) :)
Oh and Suntour is pretty good stuff to! (apart from the xpress shifters  )

Shimano all the way except for their chains which are dire

Had top of the range Sram on an old Duster and really didn't like it, even the carbon looked cheap, reminded me of stick on carbon that neds put on their chavved up citroen Saxo dashboards!

On modern bikes I go for SRAM rear mechs, shifters and chains, Shimano front mechs and cassettes. Shimano cranks are pretty good too, but their external bottom brackets are dire and the chainrings aren't very durable.
For everything else I prefer Hope and Middleburn.
I also run two bikes with the Deore M510 groupsets from about 2004 and they are very reliable.

On my older bikes I run mostly XT M730 series and DX M650 series Shimano stuff, XT and DX thumbshifters work flawlessly and the DX mechs are fantastic. The slightly newer Shimano M739 XT groupset works well on my 1997 bikes.
I'd like to get my hands on some of the indestructible early 90's Suntour stuff again though.
Mid to late 90's Sachs components which were the predecessor to Sram components have also got a good reputation.

I tend to ride shimano, i am a big fan of the X series, personally i prefer the LX levers with the lizard grips, xtr front and rear mechs, complete with hollotech chainsets, not very retro but i still have a whole lot of the old shimano gear kicking about, i must say, Sram or KMC chains are out of another world.

In my view SRAM have overtaken Shimano in the mech/shifter dept, and chains. Otherwise I use Shimano for rings/cassettes/cranks etc.

The reason being after lots of different setups from both companies, both budget and high-end I found the SRAM gears to be generally more reliable and more precise, though the shifts themselves are a tad less refined. SRAM chains I have found to be very durable and shift just as well as anything else. Cassettes and rings I have found to be very similar, but Shimano wins as they are generally cheaper.

I run/ran Shimano on basicly all bikes.

I the past I always used Sachs Chains, but currently I have it all mixed up.
Run 1 bike on a HG93 chain and one on a 7401 chain.
1 will run on a KMC chain again (X9SL) when It's running again.
and the other project will run a X10SL.
Used to have several SRAM chains and cassettes in the past, I did like the SRAM 5.0 8 speed cassette, it looked nice and was cheap, worked pretty well (didn't use it for long soon after switched to 9 spd) It was also a good option when I sold bikes... looked nice and costs just a just bucks.
Last SRAM cassette I had was a Red spider, but after 1000km threw it away cause... well it was pretty worn and worked and shifted like shite, which surprised me after so little miles and without horrible conditions.

I do plan to build a SRAM bike (apart for the front mech... need a E-type, and even if I didn't need one I am not getting a container terminal crane on my bike, reason why I am building a SRAM bike is well I wanted something different and... they are releasing a Pink set... I mean how cool is that.

BTW you guys do know that KMC does make the chains for Shimano... ;)
