SRAM Rear Mechs (10sp) advice

The 1:1 was a meaning of the pull at the shifter to the pull at the mech.
I know, and IIRC it's *nearly* 1:1, but not quite. Newer shimano stuff is also nearly 1:1 (but isn't, and annoyingly it also isn't near enough to SRAMs nearly 1:1 to be compatible.)

It's a bugger.

Re:

Actually my phrasing is wrong but I know you know what it means.

Suntour was different as its indexing at the rear was not even, I think campag is none linear at the rear spacing with respect to modern stuff (well modern 10)? Or at least that is something I read, modern stuff I've not read a lot about, let alone roadie gearing and campag. But I do have to find out even if it's only for a commuter for less than a two mile. Come on I've only started to look at 10 sp.

I quite like and can recommend 10 speed. The transitions are much less abrupt and jolting. Good for my old bones.

sram 10 speed parts are all interchangeable between road and mtb. shimano 10 speed mtb and road are not interchangeable either with each other or with sram. shimano and sram 10 speed cassettes are fully interchangeable with each other.

So if you have a 10 speed sram shifter, then any 10 speed sram rear mech should work, with either a shimano or sram 10 speed cassette. If you have shimano 10s shifters, you need a shimano 10s mech (either mtb or road, to match your shifters). sram 10s shifters are not compatible with 7/8/9 speed mechs.

Sram use 1:1 ratio, I'm not sure what shimano use now. But even if shimano used 1:1, the levers would still need to pull the same amount (number of mm per click) of cable as sram, to make them both compatible. If sram 1:1 pulls 4mm of cable per click and shimano 1:1 pulled 5mm, then they would both be 1:1 pull ratio, but would not be compatible (cable pulls are just a guess, I have no idea what the actual cable pull is on either of them for 10 speed)

So if you already have the shifters and the apex rear mech will cover your gear range, then it should work fine.

I think there are a lot of single left hand shifters available probably because they've sold all the right hand ones as singles for 1x drivetrains...

disclaimer: there are some tricks to make various combinations of sram and shimano 9 and 10 speed mechs and shifters compatible but I haven't tried them and can't comment. I imagine if you have plenty of time for messing about with spacers and trying different combinations then you can probably get something to work. but for the price of an apex rear mech, my guess is that would be a lot cheaper, take less time and messing about, and probably work better.

Apex 10 works fine with 10 speed MTB shifters. Focus even specced a flat bar carbon CX bike with it in 2013.

Re:

Well I have a cassette now and looking for some gripshift as they'll be perfect but they still seem to go for a lot of money. Its the X0 I've been looking at in silver.

Been interesting looking at the multitude of model number and names SRAM seems to have come up with. Very hard on a slow connection. Going to be easier at the weekend back on a big screen and fast connection. :)

Re:

by chance at a bike jumble I picked up a nice Apex rear mech that's had no use by the looks of it. (fit and removed or just removed job) for £5

So I have a rear mech (£5) New 10sp M771 cassette (£25), New SRAM XO gripshift front shifter in silver (£12 :( ) witha Suntour XC Pro and 42T front ring iirc, so don't really need the front shifter.

Just need a SRAM 10sp rear shifer, preferably a silver XO gripshift.

Re: you & I have almost the same set-up...

... Except I have a bafang electric motor on my DB bike but with a Shimano HG 10sp rear, x7 10sp derailleur and a single 42t front crank, on the process of ordering the SRAM xo 10sp grip shift to put on the left side because I have the twist throttle on the right and plan on keeping my flat bar clean. I want the exact actuation all around. Anyway just wanted to mention that invade you have any advice. Thx.
