Spoks too long/sticking out after wheel building?!?

Pattern makes a huge difference to spoke length a 4 cross would travel further than a 3 than a 2.
But If you say they are all 3 cross then there's only 2 things ot could be. You've bought the wrong spoke length or you've laced it wrong.
You've gptnabout 2 threads left on the nipple. Do no grind the spokes back.
I've checked the new and old spokes side by side and they're both 270mm.
And I've checked the wheel spokes patterns, they match with my other wheels of my other bike 3 cross, and also match with a 3 cross wheel pattern when looking online,so no mistakes were made during assembly..
I'm thinking maybe i counted wrong before i disassembled the wheels and was 4 cross instead of 3??

You think migh be the wheels were 4 cross instead of 3? And i counted wrong?
That could be a possibility

it's possible it was 4 cross but the more I think about it the less I think that's the case.
you 3 cross pattern counts correctly,

Other option (the cycling to work helps clear the brain) is you didn't rotate the hub far enough after fitting all the trailing spokes. but in my head I don't think that works either.

You did get shorter for the drive side, right? The wheel doesn't look very dished.

Looking at the images, if the wheels on the claud butler are the same then it's a lacing issue, as they are laced ever so slightly different, it looks like on the wheels you've built the spoke need to hole 1 hole further over on the direction of the spoke,

moving them one hole along will do nothing to the spoke length, just move them all around by one hole.... post a pic of how much they are sticking out. did you use the same nipples? or new ones that came with the spokes? if new ones, then compare the old and new nipples, maybe the old ones were longer on the inside of the rim so the spokes didn't stick out. do all the spokes stick out on each wheel, or only some of them? did you get the right length spokes in each position (front wheel will be all the same length, rear wheel different length each side, and probably different to the front so you might need 3 different lengths (sometimes you can get "lucky" and one side on the rear will be the same length as the front). wheel looks to be laced correctly but we need better pics to be able to see

no, that's correct as is.

you don't need to move the spokes, you need to turn the hub further before you fit the leading spokes.

to do this, release the tension of everything, remove the leading spokes (head on the back of the flange) twist the hub as far as you can then relace the leading spokes.

Hi, i disassembled both wheels to replace spokes, sadly i didn't take any photos of the old spokes pattern...
On both front and rear wheel, the spoke lenght was the same: 270mm with old spokes, all 36 of them i checked one by one.
So i ordered new spokes same size and i double checked.
Note, its 1993 or so old Rodi 26 x1.75 cantilever brake rim with shimano exage hub.
But yes... i used the new nipples they are a little bit different than old ones.. and yes the spokes stick out,all the spokes to be fair by the same length on both wheels
