splash paint mtb from the early 90s ....brand?

Saw some bikes in halfords the cheapo apollo bikes are heavy by 3kg, the hybrid boardman £500 is 900g lighter

I've had the bike over 20 years and frames amazing condition..decided to update the bike maybe turn it into a commuter style hybrid

Some inconsistencies with the replies above , still would be good to know the brand

These tend to be known a Gas Pipe Bike Shaped Objects (BSO) due to their use of extremely thick and heavy steel tubes. They were made for all manner of UK companies like Apollo, Radford, Claude Butler, Magna and so on. Even Raleigh made a number of Gas Pipe BSOs under the Max range. They were not high end and tended to sell for £99-£149 new. Parts tended to be Altus mixed with plastic brakes and levers, chrome seatpost, 21.1mm stems and Gripshift 400 which is all very low end. Looks like this one has has a new rear derailleur though.

Nothing nasty about them, they were a great entry into mountain bikes but they weren't great bikes.

Stems 22.2mm

Frame maybe Cromo as its oversized and light

£99-£149 range bikes back then were 15 speed ones

I even found one with a similar chair in the background - hows that for service? Not the same parts as yours as this one has been used but it has much the same kit; Kalin stem and bars, chrome steel seatpost, plastic Chi-Lee brakes, bolt axle wheels, 7 speed gripshift etc

Lots of bikes use exactly the same 'lightweight Cromo' frame, as has been mentioned before. They all came from the same factory but had different stickers applied and were produced for years and years hence the wide spread of colours and parts. This came about as most of these companies were or are owned by the same holding groups, like Tandem Cycles, Fudge Bros, Falcon etc

After a quick google image search I have found the following with exactly the same frame and similar low end parts:

1) British Eagle: Magnum, Storm, XL
2) Emmelle: Discovery, Puma, Cheetah, Cougar, Volcano, Quest, Mudflaps
3) Townsend: Torrent, Storm, Colorado

They were very, very common bikes in the 90s and were sold to people wanting the look of a mountain bike without the cost

Re:

Hey everybody, sorry to post 5 years late but I'm doing up my bike - converting this exact bike into an e-bike (it was my uncle's and with lockdown I'm setting myself a project, I find it in the garage.) I've replaced the tyres, inner tube, given it a new paint colouring and was trying to keep a similar style to the original. I was googling the bike name and somehow found this thread. The bike you have in the picture is ....

Falcon Panther

Yeah, weird I stumbled across this and doubt anybody will reply 5 years on but just noticed as I was repairing it this is the one!

Thanks, stay safe everybody!
