specialized frame - is it a stumpjumper and from when ?

I am being offered this frame

apparently it is a steel stumpjumper but the seller does not know for sure about the model and from which year and has no scale to weigh the frame or fork :cry:
it is a bottom pull tough with threaded fork

can the stumpy specialist recognize it ? and assess year ?

canti bridge may have been removed but new paint make it very hard to guess
and painter has been a bit overzealous with seatpost :shock:
nice colour though - ever been used by spe ?

don't have the frame at hand but I doubt anything can be seen because of new paint :cry: - will have the seller check in any case

I have a 1997 that looks similar but has Ritchey cowled rear drop-outs so is earlier than that.

looks pretty stumpjumper to me. got a 1992 spec stumpy and it got the same dropouts. what axle-to-crown does the fork have?
btw. i wouldn't pay much 'cause its a major pain to remove the paint from all the places where it shouldn't be (threades, crown race, seatpost ?!).

I agree - I have a '92 - difficult to age yours if the canti bridge has been removed though.

Specialized has used red a lot - iconic for the brand I would say - but this looks brighter than the reds they have used. I have got pictures of most of the Stumpjumpers from 1988 to 2002 if you want to take a look:

Pre 94

It looks like a pre 95 Stumpy so serial number will give a clue maybe.
You would be mad to take the canti bridge off and more than likely its had the canti noodle removed. It could also be a 90 model that had the canti hanger on the seatpost binder. Canti noodle was 93 - 95 but this looks like it has the 1inch steerer and narrow downtube which would put it 94 or earlier. In 95 the headtube was 1& 1/8th and the downtube diametre increased by approx 7mm. Judging by the chainstays they are direct drive squaring off at the BB so general appearance is of a tange prestige Stumpy, 90 - 94. Funny as these were probably the only years they didnt come in bright red :roll:
These are the best riding Stumpys, non suspension corrected. The best in my opinion.
Post the numbers once you get it.
