spares for M950 hub

I need a ring seal for an M950 front hub, and I'm slightly surprised to find that Madison no longer has them on its parts list.

Does anybody know of an LBS that has particularly good stocks of older Shimano spares?

Or perhaps a Shimano importer outside the UK that might have more older stock than Madison keeps?

Shimano supply spares minimum 5 years after a product becomes obsolete - unless it's a component they don't want people to keep on using.

M950 is way beyond this deadline.

Yes, it's twelve years old, but nevertheless some other parts of the M950 front hub are still on Madison's list, unfortunately not the particular part that I need.

I'l bet there's one on a shelf in a shop somewhere though.

No but typiing it in to google HB-M950 often find parts (you can still get some M900 stuff etc..)

Not sure which seal you need or the dut cap etc.. (part no.)
but e.g. http://www.petracycles.co.uk/m950-dust-p-5681.html
Thanks for that FC, but it's the seal that I need, which is a Y-23F 0500, and even Petra Cycles hasn't got one, and they confidently state that if they don't list something, it probably isn't available in the UK.

The seal used in the HB-M950 seems to be the same as that in the M960 and M965, so not quite as old as I thought, but still not available from Madison apparently.

Despite what dbmtb says, I don't think it's very impressive if you have to junk an expensive hub as recent as an M965 for want of a simple rubber seal.

The seal seems to be sold with the cone as a lot, part 23R 9802. I don't know whether or not you can get hold of one of those, but a few places overseas seem to list that as available. Google Y23R98020. e.g.

It may be galling to buy a whole new cone just for the seal, but better than throwing the hub away. Actually the labyrinth seals on these hubs are pretty good on their own. You might get away with just filling the hub with good grease and doing without the contact seal, provided you won't be riding through axle-deep water.

Failing that, there's quite a strong degree of similarity between many of Shimano's "110" axle hubs: 910, 738, 950, 751, etc. I don't know whether or not the parts are close enough to interchange, but I have both a 738 and a 950 somewhere, and I may be able to make time at the weekend to measure the seals if you like.

Petra still list the 738 cone and seal as available:

If it's same as HB-M965 (I can check tomorrow) there's a good chance we have one.

If noone else comes up with anything, get back to me.

Zut alors! Zat wunaadJeem, 'e 'its ze spot yet again!

Well, that was indeed enlightening, but how about this then?

It's the seal from a Dura-Ace HB-7700 and both the seal and the lock nut look very similar to those on the HB-M950. And it's only £0.99!! What do you think, could they be interchangeable?

Is this what you're after? If so I'm sure I have some of these at work.

I can only say maybe. On the one hand, you'd think Shimano wouldn't use a different seal with its own part number unless there was a good reason. I did wonder whether it was because the M950 uses 11 balls per side and so has a larger dustcap diameter, but the 7700 is also shown with 11 balls per side, and seems to use the same seal as the 6400 and 738.

Obviously the way to be sure you get what you need is to match the part exactly if you can. Perhaps dbmtb can help, or failing that, surely someone must have replaced their cones at some point and kept the old ones.

If you can't get an exact match, I've got hubs here I can measure when time permits, including a Dura Ace 7700.
