Anybody tried getting this chaps number from directory enquiries and just giving him a call?

It's easy to ignore emails, PMs and letters. When faced with a more normal social interaction of a phone call people will often change their tune somewhat. It's worked for me on a few occasions.

I've heard nothing back from my letter, but haven't had my statement through yet to check if the cheque's gone out, so I won't brand him a thief just yet.

Long way from me. It'd be a bit odd getting someone who's not involved to go and beat him up. Unless they like a good fight.
