Some nights I hate bikes.

tonights fun with bikes.

1. Attempt to add new 27" wheels to frame. FAIL

reason, axles too thick for drop outs. spindle itself woont go into drop out, spacing is fine?

2. Attempt to add cottered chainset. FAIL.

spindle too short for new cottered chainset.

3. Attempt to take old williams double chainset apart. FAIL

bolts are between at 11mm and 12mm size, cant grip with pliers, adjustible spanner is too big.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHH.

I'm a little surprised you didn't recognise these issues before they occurred, Skelley2, such is your authoritative knowledge of vintage bicycles.

Issues arise in any build, that's just how it is. Bike is a '63 but so far seems to be very much 50's standards.

@omegastrada, I've never claimed to be an expert, I just enjoy building old bikes.

Drop outs appear to be a little narrower, tried some racelites. They fit, later spindles 60's/70's don't. This is a new one on me to be honest.

As far as chainring goes, a 50's cottered crank will do, williams or the like.

smaller adjusty spanner should do the trick with the bolts.

Just one of those evening where everytime you try to do anything things go mad.

Hi Skelly :) "I know what you mean buddy" I have those days too, like every other day, only it's my life thats like that, it's bikes that keep me sane, haha. Did smash a Campagnolo nouvo Tipo hub in anger though the other week, because the block refused to come off. Took a lump hammer to it in the end and enjoyed every second of it's demise. Later buddy, Laz.

the joys of owning or messing with elderly bikes , women are just the same !

its all fun in the end

Most standard production bikes in the 1950/60's were 5/16 front, 3/8 rear. Quick release hubs then were 9 and 10mm. So you need slightly less than .5mm off the hub spindles. We used to file the tops off the threads where they emerge from the lock nuts all the way round, but it only needs a little, far less than the depth of the threads. Production Raleigh had 5/16 rear fork ends, it helped to secure the Sturmey Archer spindles which put a torque on the spindle in some gears.

Better night.

took a file to the axle spindles. wheels fitted now fitted and tyres (27" michelin world tours) on!

Found another cottered chainset, from a 70's carlton but will do for now, fits perfect.

So actually looking not bad :)
