For a comparison I went to a website that worked out what I would have to pay now for the same bike given inflation and the 21 years that have elapsed and for me, rather than £600 it would be about £1100.

Do you think you would be able to now get a modern bike for the same money (in real terms) that would be as good?

I think it might be a good bit better but mibee with a lot less soul.

The DB Apex I bought in 91 was £567 in 91-ish. My 95 Apex was £699 in 95.

My now 91 Apex was bought on here, as was my 91 Axis. My other 95 Apex was bought as frame from ebay, forks from ebay, over the past year or two.

My 1992 Alpinestars cromega DX was £529 from Bikescene
in Guisborough, sold it a couple of years later for £175 I think,
just bought another one off here to relivemy past.

My 1st Mtb was a '93 Kona Hahanna(Red/Silver) bought in '94 so sale price £430 i think. Also bought from Sensible Bike Company in Liss Hampshire :)

I absolutley loved it & it made me a Kona fan forever

My first MTB was a 21" (I am 5'7" the shop said I'd grow into in.... ) Emmelle Cortina. I was actually OK and I upgraded it like mad with pocket money to a few XT bits and bobs etc.

Broke the frame and forks in one go and LBS sold me (well my mum and dad) a GT Tequesta frame, forks, stem, headset, seatpost for £100. new.

Here it is once built up:

I had a 50t chainring on that badboy!!

My 1st "proper" mtb was an Orange Prestige bought in 1993/4. The frame was bought cheap from Leisure Lakes in Bury as it was a last seasons model and cost £300 or thereabouts, also bought the Pace RC31 forks at the same time. Then swapped a few bits over from my old bike and bought some new bits, end result was a mix of DX/XT with Magura Raceline brakes.

All in all I think it cost around £1200, god knows how I managed to afford that with only a part-time job... Guess I hadn't really discovered cars, women, and booze at that point

the first mtb i bought was a raliegh marauder and it cost me £120
the first expensive bike i bought was a 95 cannondale super vee
that cost me £1730 with some upgrades

Townsend Beartooth, some will dispute this is a mtb as opposed to BSO, but it cost £112 in 1994. Edinburgh Bikes Contour 300 £199 in 1996, Saracen Dirtrax £399 in 1998, Carrera Hellcat £750 in 2000. Pretty much everything else has been second/third/fourth hand :D

My C-16 came from Stif in Leeds for the princely sum of £1234. Built from scratch with full XT, Hope Ti, Pace MXC, Flite etc. Bike of my dreams at the time and I still have it now
