Slipping chain on 1x retro build

All good advice, I would just add to spend 5 seconds checking that the rear mech springs back with some force, if the spring is weak or just binding the chain can unship from the front. Hope this helps.

Good point - I will double-check. Thanks

Re:

I have converted a lot of bikes from 3x to 1x, both for me and friends.

I have had zero success doing this by using a standard middle front ring - e.g. shimano 36 - from a 3x chainset. It never works in my experience.

I have however, had 100% success when using a narrow/wide or 'cling ring' up front. These can be expensive (for example hope at 45 gbp or race face at 30 gbp) or cheap (for example Snail from China on eBay at 8.00 gbp) all work equally well in my view.

I also make sure that the chain line is right with a steel straight edge (you've done that)
I also maje sure that the B screw is right (I think you have done that)
I make sure that the chain is the right length (but much tighter than shimano recommend - wrap round front and large rear and have mech cage almost at the end of its travel)
Check chain for any tight links
Check for wear in cassette and chain (I think you have done that)

Re:

Brilliant, thanks. I have done most of that, but will use it As a checklist to go through everything again.

The chainring is a single-speed ring, no ramps or pins. But it isnt 1x specific.

Thanks again

Re:

Good shout on the n/w ring. Ive done the same on a carbon crankset i had to go from 2x to 1x and never had an issue. I bought some of the cheap Chinese rings in a couple of sizes as well as a UK made race ti ring which I went with as it looked better in both quality and aesthetics. Chain length I just did the standard big to big plus 2 links and it has been fine on a 1x10 set up.

Everything was new when fitted so no wear or sloppy springs to worry about.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. One of the (few) downsides to living in Denmark, is that anything bought from China will get stopped by Customs, and tax will be added, based on the retail value of the item, here in Denmark (one of the most expensive countries in the world!). Therefore, getting a n/w ring might cost more than the bike did (around £30). Still, I will have a look at that option.

Re:

Denmark is expensive, I went to Copenhagen recently and had the most expensive portion of chips I think I'll ever have in my life.

That said, you can pick up a Deckas or Snail n/w ring for under £10, Hopefully after tax it won't be too much more.

Thanks to all - I fixed the slipping at the rear. I removed another link from the chain, making it almost comically-short. But it worked. Chainline is slightly off, making it rub in the highest gear. Might add a 1mm spacer to the right BB cup and wind the left in a bit more.

Re:

....just buy a second hand Hope one on eBay?

That doesn’t cause an avalanche of Danish import duties.....?
