Single Speed advise

Old School Grand Master
Hi, I am thinking of converting my 16" 94 Cindercone to singlespeed. I have no Idea what size chainring and rear sprocket to use.

I use this bike for pub runs and general fun, I would ideally like it ratio'd like a 24" BMX

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers J

most tend to use a ratio of 2:1 for off road, so 32:16 or 34:17.
It's the most common ratio for off road riding, for sure. :)

Gravy Monster wants a pub bike setup, a slightly bigger ratio will be perfect for that application. ;)

It could be that your frame will dictate your gear ratio if you don't want to use a tension device.(the so called magic ratio) If its only short journeys where the gear ratio isn't as important, then this would also be a cleaner set up.
Sheldon Brown has the answers as usual

On my Gt i run 46-23 mainly because it cost me nothing. Front is an old road chainset and the back is a butchered up HG cassette i chose the 23 for 2 reasons

1. No need for a device or half link as it fits just nicely with good tension.
2. Its a nice gentle ratio, Which i have named "Fat bloke coming home from the pub drunk ratio"

Works for me

Thanks for all your quick and very helpul responses  , I will get cracking and an have a go and getting it convereted asap.

Cheers J
