Lagavulin 16 year old - if he likes skye malt then he will probably like the peatyness of Lagavulin too, fairly strong flavour but still smooth. From Islay, usually around £40 a bottle.

Never tried Japanese malt but they do win prizes. I've tried a few swedish malts - which are fairly new on the scene, quite nice. Tasmania make a good one too.
