I was under the impression single speed mtb's were a fairly new genre?

Depends how you look at it. Some would argue that it was fitting gears that turned cruisers into mountain bikes, although single speeds persisted for a while. Scroll down here:

you'll see one being raced XC in 1977. Yes, he's pushing, so are the others :)

Amusing titbit from here about the Road Apple Rally:

"An old-time singlespeed class was started in 1993..." -- it was retro before retro was invented ;)

Your description of an mtb almost seems to rule out most stuff we call retro. Are you sure your on the right site

I was under the impression single speed mtb's were a fairly new genre? I'm sure there were always a few people doing it over the years but its only in the last five or so years that certain manufacturers have taken notice and offered sliding dropout options on their frames.

Maybe this thread should be moved to the 97> section...... :D

Converted my Clockwork to SS in '95. There were a fair few people 'round these parts riding SS back then. Nothing's changed. The initial uptake locally came straight from someone returning from a trip to San Fran if memory serves.

Yes I'm Steve Smith (honest, I'm not kidding) and worse my exwife refferred to me as a Meercat due to my habit of sitting bolt upright and staring intently at everything that passed us by on the coach holidays we used to go on

As I say it was the 90's that started my SS interest after a article in whatever mtb mag I was reading about the Californian bike scene

teee heee, horses for courses and each to their own and all that. I love a good "discusion"!

mid nineties - ooh, that early! When did Geoff Apps start making frames? Did he go ss. Did he think i can get by with the limited no of gears available with a hub gear? No. Some would argue that it was fitting gears that turned cruisers into mountain bikes - so does removing them turn your bike back into a cruiser? and in my experience, if the terrains that bad, the mud tends to builds up round the brakes and frame and locks wheels up, long before it renders the gears useless. So theres still no excuse.

That said, my new rides gunna be running the notorious suntour mountech rear mech so I’ll let you know how long before it jams/ folds/ stops working and I limp home in one gear... all humble like.
