Silly question - ahead stem on threaded fork

You still have the problem of the thinner tube wall on the threaded forks though......

Plus the threads are stress risers!!!

I wasn't talking about bending it, I was talking about cracks forming over time. How will the star fangled nut reinforce it?

Why is it any more likely to crack as an Ahead as shear with a threaded headset?

because the thread where the fork exits the aheadset causes the steerer to be a miniscule amount thinner.

Because one has 150mm of quill overlap between the points of retention, tensioned against a full wall thickness section of steerer, and the other is clamping directly onto an area of completely unsupported, threaded, reduced wall thickness steerer extension...


That is night and day, irrelevant of any claims to engineering knowledge...

Ditto... and this was on a jump bike that the lads built for me with donated parts after my bmx got nicked.
I ran it for 6 months, then passed it on to someone else who's bike was lifted. It became the communal bike that nobody owned but everyone rode and loved. It ran with a threaded fork, headlock bolt thing and ahead stem for 2years before the rear triangle snapped

No, it's not ideal, but unless its left unchecked, and completely abused, it will probably be ok

Just my "experience based opinion"
How many people have actually seen, witnessed or ridden a setup like this and had it snap, crack, or cause ones teeth to be smashed out of their face?

Hmm, you've got me thinking now..........

Bear in mind the bike will probably do 10 miles a year max and I will be keeping a close eye on it (let's face it, it's an excuse to spend time in the garage "inspecting" the bikes )
