well...taking forward the thread of a month or so ago, my 203 alligator disc with XT caliper had some howl suppression work done on it - full calliper check and piston service, disc clean, pad clean, removal of one clearance washer - and no howl. Gone. For a week. Than back just as bad as ever and braking gone to hell. So......decided on clean of disc, clean of calliper (confirm no leaks) and change from RESIN ALUMINIUM Shimano pads to UBERBIKE KEVLAR SINTERED.

Someone here warned that the resin shimano pads could be howlers and I think that this is indeed the problem. I hope.

Sounds like a leaky caliper.

Yes I thought so, but I have checked through the calliper a number of times and there's no spray problem etc

Doesn’t need to be a lot.

Squealing could be a misalignment or something but loss of power definitely points to contamination.

If there’s no chance it’s coming from over spray of lubricants or environmental factors (do you ride on roads with oil spillage on them in the wet?) then it really only leaves the braking system itself as the source.

Yes I agree. I do worry about ‘microspray’ from Shimano brake calipers. I’ve had that a couple of times. But also easy to drop one drip of oil when lubing the foam washers in forks, which we do regularly, and helps keep down stanchion wear. But I am wrapping front caliper in rags when I do that now.....
