I would opt for the latest you can get for the money you want to spend.

Get the newest/biggest specced iMac you can afford.

Models after 2011 come without the internal CD drive but have SD card slots instead.

Models from mid-2010 and 2011 onwards can be upgraded to the latest OS – avoid all iMacs before mid-2010.

You can upgrade the late 2009 iMacs..

Still, it makes sense to get something newer, less worn, and the nice thinner bezel and much less weight!

I'm not planning on carrying it around!

Negotiating on a late 2013 21.5 i5 2.7 with 8gb and 1tb in 'little used' condition. With box and all the bits. And local so I can pick up and see it working.

I'd check to see what models people are predicting the next OS update leaves behind, first.

You will be tickety boo for a few years yet with that model. Apple tend to be fairly long lived.
