Show us your bike history..

1990 Nishiki Ariel - 1st mountain bike, rescued from parents attic after Hurricane Katrina. It still had "Katrina mud" in the BB and seat tube. Work in progress, I slapped a Kona project two on in it. Hoping to make it a fixie.

1993 ALPINESTARS ALMEGA E900, gave to my brother in law. 2nd genaeration XTR, Manitou 3, Syncros cattleprod.

1989 Diamond Back AXIS TEAM, Full XT, changed out wheels and cranks but still have original wheels and cranks.

1995 Specialized S-works HT, 1st gen XTR and Hope rear hub

2003 Specialized S-works EPIC

1993 Serotta TMAX converted to Single Speed.

Absolutely no order or sense to my bike history which has included 16 mtb's from different points of time.
Has included cheapos from Emmelle and Townsend and nice kit from Specialised and Carrera (Hellcat was nice even by Halfords standards) plus several Saracens.
Went retro 2 years ago when I found my Schwinn Mesa Runner by accident in a pile of to be recycled frames. Then I discovered this site and the rest is history.
Some would argue I've always been retro in that I do not like sophistication or technological advance beyond early 90's bikes.

Luddites of the world unite !!!!!!!!!!

Hi everybody,

I used several MTB bikes in the 90's.

- Bianchi ARANA with a cheap Suntour groupset
- SUNN 5003 with a full LX 93 groupset, a must have in France in 1993 !
- Kona Kilauea 95 with RS MAG21, one of the best steel frame I used
- Alpinestars TiMEGA 93 with Fimocco E129 quite rare frameset, only 3 were sold in France but the geometry was too bad...
- AMP B3 with RS MAG21SL and full 96 XT groupset, my first (and only...) sub 11kg full suspension bike.

The two MTB I still own are :
- a 1996 Peugeot Team 2000 in Columbus Genius OR, the frame of Jerome Chiotti in the 96 world cup.

I rebuilt it in the good old way : Project 2 rigid fork (couldn't fin a peugeot one), Answer Attac stem/handlbar, and good old Deore thumbshifters with Ritchey canti brakes adn Suntour XC Pro levers. I'm only missing the gold old Deore DX rear mech or a pre94 XT one.

- a 98 Sintesi Jade Easton Varilite with a 98 White Brother SC70 (coil + oil cartridge) and quasi complete XTR M950 groupset => not the lightest bike I owned but surely the best I ever had !

In my garage I still own some very rare road bikes too :)

Best regards,
Chris

After finishing BMX racing in 1985, I had a break from bikes for a few years, came back on MTB and have been ever since.

1 1993 to 1994 Marin Bear Valley (second hand bike '91)
2 1994 to 1996 Marin Nail Trail '94
3 1996 to 1999 Marin Nail Trail '96
4 1999 Cannondale F800 '99, still owned from new, going for respray soon

After seeing this site in Nov 2007, have bought some retro frames,

1991 Kona Lavadome, in the loft at the moment!
1995 Kona Hahanna, now sold
1996 Kona Cindercone, my first project and gave it to sister

My fave bike is my Cannondale F800, for retro bikes it's any steel Kona's from 1991 to 1997 years.

Mine are quite low/mid range offerings & I'm buggered if I can remember the years of the particular bikes most of them got nicked :(

Raleigh Mustang, black 'n white one (was nicked)
A cheapo ATB, so bad I can't remember what it was, only had it for 3 months before it was returned as unfit for purpose!
Raleigh Mustang (Marbled Purple one) x 2 (both nicked)
(Road bike: British Eagle 453 frame & forks, 105 concealed cable brakes 105 gears, nice!)
Claude Butler (Magma?), gloss black with bright green paint spatter x 2 (both nicked)
Ridgeback 603
'95 Scott Peak (can still get my hands on it if I want to) Mostly original, wheels & tyres, brakes & saddle are not original)
'03 Orange Gringo Still in my possession, now with added RS Reba Race goodness :)
'06 Orange 5 awaiting an '08 XT crankset & XTR pedals :D

1992 Diamond Back Traverse - trashed frame then skipped
1993 Trek 930 - sold
1994 Parkpre Pro Image (purchased in 95) - recently restored
1998 Specialized Rockhopper - the mrs bike
1998 Marin Mount Vision - bought secondhand in 2001
1999 Cannondale f900 - sold in 2006
2004 Kona Cinder Cone - bought in 2007 built up as winter hack bike
2007 Trek SL1000 - road bike

It occurred to me that by looking at someones bike history you should be able to clearly see when they stated to regress and get into the retro scene.

OK here's a funny one then:

1988 Raleigh Discovery
1992 Specialized Stumpjumper FS
...... long time nothing but my Stumpjumper
2005 Scott Scale 20
2005 Specialized S-Works M2
2006 KLEIN Rascal (1991 model)
2007 S-Bike 909DH (1993 model)
2007 AlpineStars CroMega DX (1990 model)
2007 KLEIN Attitude (1990 model)
2008 SOLD the Scott Scale 20 again

So for me, there was nothing new between 1992 and 2005, that's how long I used my Stumpjumper FS. So at least that one earned it's money back ;-) The modern Scale didn't last too long because I just can't get into disc brakes... and now I'll be looking for a Zaskar (LE) or Xizang to complete my collection (and then hopefully it'll end there... but don't count on it hehe).
