I don't think that shock will fit a Max Backbone.. The mounts on the mainframe on both the Max and the regular FSR are fairly narrow, so many lockout shocks or angled valve shocks have to be run upside-down, or just wont fit.

I have tried out the extended BETD mount off my old ('99) FSR elite on the Max Backbone (frame size: L) & found that it just pushed the seatpost waay too high to be comfortable, even on the lower of the two holes, as the pivot mounts are longer than the standard shock link. I've got my configured as an AM/XC-type bike anyway, so the regular travel link suits well (running an X-Fusion O2 air shock, 165mm e2e) with Magura Durin MD120mm forks up front.

The 'seatstays' on the Max B rear triangle are very sturdy, but light, so I'm using an A2Z brake adapter, bolted through the chainstay plate (which was pre-drilled). Also - Magura make some excellent hose adapters, as that Generation of FSRs don't have hose mounts..

Thanks for the reply Osella, that was really helpful. I think I will build it up with the stock
link to see how it feels/works first. Then maybe try something different after I know what
stock feels like.
I am going to go ahead and put the 2001 enduro seatstay on for disc brakes.
Waiting on my Rockshox Sector RL 150mm coil fork right now, will post up more pics as I get
further along.

No worries! I thought that some of the later seatstays didn't fit though..? There was a thread on here from a guy who tried an enduro swingarm on an FSR (a '98 Max Backbone I think..) and found the pivot mounts were spaced differently. Not sure about seatstays only though.

Yeah, I tried the same.. Swapped my BETD link off my old 'regular' FSR and put the factory link on & it just felt rubbish! But then again the BETD link screwed up the BB height & shock position on the Max Backbone - so just goes to show BETD know what they are doing! ;) I'd go with stock first, then start playing around, the linkages are so easy to swap it's not a big hassle anyhow.

What's the headtube size on yours? My L(arge) frame has a gigantic headtube, 130mm IIRC, so even with 120mm forks I can't run risers or any length of stem.. I've got a 0 degree DH stem & flat Sunline V1 bars just to keep the controls low enough, otherwise it turns into a chopper!

Yea, I read that thread, I think it was the enduro seat stays he was trying to fit, but I can't remember what year he tried.
Since you mentioned this, I trial fitted the 2001 disc seat stay on the elite tonight.

I bought this frame, a 2001 Enduro with the disc seat stays a few weeks ago.

I took/stole the seat stay off of it, and put a Vbrake stay on it from a 1999 FSR ground control sport (black) that I picked up a long while ago.
I'm gonna build this bike up also from spare parts. I can't afford to put disc brakes and wheels on two bikes, so I put my spare XTR Vbrakes on it.

Here's a few pics of the 2001 Enduro seatstay test fitted to the 1998 Elite, this seatstay has the same clearance as the stock one and is a good fit.

I hope to have the rear end all together by this weekend, should have my fork by then too. :)

So you say the BETD link worked pretty good on your (mine is a 1998 ground control, the blue one) regular FSR? That might be something I could try.

I just measured the head tube on the Elite and it's right around 128mm (5") also.
I'm going to try and convert the Sektor dual position 120 or 150mm coil to U-turn 110-150mm coil, so it'll give me some room to mess around with front travel.
The bike came with a short DH stem and I have a couple others to try, thanks for your thought on this. :)

Wow - that's excellent news about the seatstays! Might have to keep an eye out for a 2001 Enduro back-end for mine then! Better than the A2Z adapters..

That Enduro's looking very nice too!! Very understated..

Yeah, my BETD link was the old 2-position one from around '99. Yeah, gave incredibly plush travel on mine - which was a Black '98 - so should work well!
Hmm, sounds like a plan for the forks.. Mine are 80-120mm, but the adjustment happens at the bottom end rather than the top (if you understand) so they are still the same A2C!.. Yeah, short stems are a must!

A few upgrades to mine this year, all done and rolling again. Very happy.
i'll think about a frame and form respray in the spring, but we'll see.

Whew! it's been a busy (last) week around here, thanks for the reply Osella.
I did get the bearings installed in the Elite this past weekend though and it looks like the 2001 seat stay will work out. I post some pics sometime this week (thinking maybe I should start a build thread instead of cluttering this one up with my stuff).

Thanks for the thoughts on the enduro, I didn't plan on building it, just stealing the seat stay and selling it on. But I kinda like it so it'll be my mud/beater/loaner bike :p .

I also got the 2013 RockShox Sektor RL dual position coil fork and converted it to 110-150mm u-turn coil, it was one of the easiest mods I've ever done. Just switched one spring for the other, only took about 15 minutes.
