I started out using the ring from a 3x crankset, along with a cog scavenged from a cassette, wanted to dip my toe in the singlespeed water to see if it was for me. In that guise, it wasn't good at all. Any hard pedaling, and the chain would pop off. It ruined what could have been some great riding in the Canadian Shield. As soon as I switched to SS specific gears, the problem went away, haven't dropped a chain since.
