Show me your... Neo Retro riders.

Rocky Mountain Blizzard 1996

Frame and cranckset are the only parts left from the bike as I bought it in 1997.
Due to some poor maintenance over the years major surgery was needed to prevent further degradation.
Which route? Period correct or new and lightweight parts. Since I wasn't affected by the retro-virus (yet) the last option was the way to go.
Managed to cut of some 2000 grams by mounting lightweight components and bolts.

Benefits: More responsive forks with lockout, smooth shifting and braking thanks to the Nokon cable system and better acceleration.

 Modern SRAM 9 speed (now out of date ) Exustar pedals, And a Rocket Ron.

skinny that proflex is scwheet

heres mine a 95 sv dale with 2000 sids ,discs hope rear and an lx front
crossrides (2009)
tektro as the Japanese call it retro with a technical edge

What you considering CTK?

Love jupke's RM. Someone else (ameybrook perhaps?) did a real nice disk braked up Yo. Was considering doing the same with my spare Yo but fortunately an IF stepped in to fill that void ;)

One criticism I'd level is that a lot of these neo-retro build with what look like overly tall forks.

More of an evolution than neo retro. It's my only MTB and gets riden a lot (wears out a lot too) so it seems silly to use period stuff...

This year it's gained new chainset (retro-ish). New fork (retro-ish). New Ritchey WCS back wheel (with disc tabs, frame's not got 'em though). XTR rear mech (not at all retro) and a Dura Ace cassette (again not at all retro). A few odds and ends too

The fork was unused, an ebay bargain (finding forks with V bosses is not easy) My chainset with BB is lighter than the listed new RaceFace deus chainset weight. :?

I'm really not sure at the mo... considering

a) splashing a load of cash on a top retro frame and building with good quality 'period whatever' bits. Something like Utahdog's EWR with F80s or Sids.

or b) spending a small amount of cash on some unfashionable but decent retro bike and making good&light&fast with as little money as possible.

I nearly bought a '96 Principia off Ebay.de yesterday which would have been pretty cool. My road bikes and my modern MTB are all in full working order(!) and basically I just want a project!

I also really like looking at MTBs that have been ridden, evolved over time and are a reflection of the owner + hopefully they can give me some ideas I can pinch...

Here's what I have been tinkering with over the last few months.

Cardinal sin or ultimate 90's MTB? Certainly not for purists but what else do you do with a battered Yo frame with a rotten seat rube?

After spending a winter riding a modern bike I really wanted an all round Neo-retro machine that could be riden everywhere all year round. Seeing as brakes and tyres are where the real progress has been made over the last 20 years I decided that's what the modifications would be based around.

Forks are 100mm SIDs with the canti mounts filed off. They sag down to around 80mm when rider is aboard. Geometry is spot on- Yo's were steep and racey but with the longer fork it gives the same angles asmy modern Cotic Soul!
Brakes are early Formula 4 pots. Add tubeless rims and tyres and then finish with bling 90's finishing kit and you have something that looks good but rides even better!

I'm hoping to finish it over the next few weeks and see how it rides.
