Re:

For the most part it's nicer looking than some of the more recent MTB components, I think the current XT chainset is really ugly and most rear mechs these days look like a transformer that's half way through changing into something else; lots of little nooks and cranies that get full of mud and grime.

It's also rare to see any bare, or anodised metal on the more recent components and I wonder how durable painted and lacquered finishes are.

Probably more durable than the M900 cranks finish was, I would hope anodising and lacquer technology has advanced.

They seem to have missed out HyperGlide-I (or IG time) when they added profiling and rear ramping for downshifting.
big black SIS looking MegeRange rings? designed to hide the hideousness of it

Direct mount chainrings, so back to M950 style...
I quite like the look of the crank though, not to design for design sake and looks functional :)

in fact, quite a lot of it looks functional, rather than for the look. I know it's the Proto in the images, so I guess things may change a bit. and why does that cassette say do not use on the 2nd ring ?

3D printed spider? Or 3D printed sprocket?

Either way, it's probably just a mock up part.
Not unusual for companies to make parts that look like fully finished (for fit and form) but with bugger all mechanical strength.

I'm just waiting for the price of 11 speed XTR Di2 to crash, so i can Di2 my new bike, and get the shift buttons the right way round. (So i can have my rapid rise back....... ;o) )

Maybe, but with the older style silver cranks there was always the option of buffing out any scratches and polishing the cranks to smarten them up a bit. With painted cranks, once you have scratches or some heal rub, it's mutch harder to sort out.

My 30 year old Deore cranks:

Re:

But with M900 you needed to do all the crank due to the finish on them. M730/M650 etc are a different finish

I know the black painted are poor to maintain. But these new XTR look to have a similar clear coated ano style coating, maybe more like the m960 in the colouring, a slightly greyer M900 finish.
Though the rear mech looks to have the old STX-RC finish.

The only black bit is the logo area and sides. The rub area is the shiney finish.
At least in pictures.

The spd's don't look any different. Could have ti axels at least. As a buyer of light weight high end kit. I don't see any thing to buy. As for 11 & 12 speed i've not heard any thing good about the life of the chains. But i do like the rear mech. Even if the cage is to long for my tastes. The power of the big S surely they can sell carbon/ti parts and not increase the price much?
