Yes you can get away with a 9speed but why would you?? they cost more and will wear your cassette and chainrings out at a much faster rate

Told you 'they' will get upset. In practice there is very little if any problems or extra wear. Especially chainrings - where do you get that idea from?

just an observation after 30 years in the cycle trade setting up and running one of the first shimano service centres in the midlands i find that people who run nine speed chains on 8 buy them more often which suits me more money in till especially as nine speed chains cost more
