Shimano Deore DX Chainset issue . . .

Hello there folks,

This is my first post on your forum here. I've been reading the posts on here for a while but just decided to join.

I wonder if anyone would be able to help me with a problem I'm having:

I purchased a Shimano Deore DX chainset on eBay a couple of months back and I just got round to fitting it to my bike at the weekend, along with some other DX components (rear derailleur, cassette) and a new chain.

I was very disappointed to find that the chain is jumping on the middle chainring when I try to power up a hill or accelerate quickly on flat. It looks as though some of the teeth on the middle ring are worn to the point of unusable.

I'm trying to source a replacement for the middle ring but it is proving very difficult. Any SG rings that I can find on eBay look similarly worn and I don't want to waste any more money/time to just have the same problem.

Does anyone know of any chainrings that can be bought new that would be compatible with a Shimano Deore DX chainset - SG 46/36/24. I think BDC is 110mm.

Really appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

Hello and welcome

Any 110 BCD chainring will be compatible. Road chainsets went 'compact' (110 BCD) a few years ago so there are plenty of middle rings around.

The DX crank will have some spacers so dont lose them - use these to make the ring sit away from the outer ring enough to stop the chain rubbing in case your new chainring is a little thinner than the original one.

Dont worry about mixing 'road' with MTB, theres no compatibility issues other than adjusting spacers to suit. And ignore '10spd or 9spd compatible' too. Thats the great thing about 'old' bicycles, theres not a lot that isnt compatible.

add a picture of the chain ring, some of these rings have all sorts going on to help shifting so it might not be wear

Wow! So many helpful comments. Thanks very much everyone.

I ordered the Shimano Sora one. It's all bolted together now and works like a dream.

xxnick1975 probably had a good point. The original middle chainring had what I believe are called "ramps" fitted. The new one doesn't have these but I find it works well enough.

Thanks again for all your help.

Re:

Just to follow up what xxnick1975 requesting a photograph of the chainring: here are a few pictures. I think you can see that there is quite a bit of wear and some of the teeth are barely there at all.

the 'missing' teeth are normal but, yes, there is wear.

Look closely and you'll see the shifting teeth on the original
