shimano 200GS shifter help

Hello,

i have a 1992 Marin Muirwoods which has the orignal 200GS running gear

the problem is the gear shifters seem to not work well at all. The rear gear shifter works ok going from 1st to 7th but doesn't work going back up It will sometimes work rarely lol.

The front shifter will move the derailleur but it will not stay in any position just moves back down.

Anybody know if this can be fixed? don't really want to change the shifters really.

the grease in the shifters goes hard and gums the ratchets up. Give it a good soaking with WD40 inside the mechanism and it should loosen up again.

what he said but consider using a thinner spray as WD40 doesnt always break down the gunk in the shifters. I only mention it as I'm doing a similar thing to some LX shifters.

would like to say thank you for the advise as now i have all my gears working again used WD40 and 3 in 1 in aerosol form. After spraying it all in i just kept pushing the shifter levers and it all working now

You should have some well lubricated dirt and gunk in there now.

At the least I'd remove both derailleurs and clean them thoroughly. Then remove the cable and housing and clean them the best you can. I'd give the shifters themselves a cleaning as well. Lube and reassemble.

Better yet - new cable and housing.

I'd wager your problem will return in a year or two after the lube dries up and some new dirt gets in.

Not if my experience with STX shifter is anything to go by, what is said above about the grease is correct. I stripped a set of these shifters that had similar symptoms and the lightly sprung pawls just get stuck with the grease that turns very sticky and gummy over the years. They just need cleaning in a thin solvent and re-lubing. Now if it was down change that was the problem you'd be right.

Note-
The grease was meant to be in there and once removed will limit the life of the shifter.Personally and so there are retro parts still available in 10 yrs time it might be a good idea to pump a bit in with your pace grease gun.
You do have the pace grease gun dont you ?,i mean its like a badge of honour

White spray grease is reasonably thin and should not limit the life as it Wurth SaBesto. I have also found TF2 lube leaves a nice thin oily residue that would also work well.
