Shifting Preference

Voted for thumbies but have orginal style gripshift on my current ride. Agreed they are a pain to set up hence why, although my gear cables could do with be a touch shorter, while they work they are staying put!

If project Maverick goes well, then it may be that the Celerity joins the SS world too!

I'm really not keen on thumbshifters.

You have to rotate your wrist in the 'wrong' direction depending on what gear you're currently in and what gear you want. In some situations that's either really uncomfortable or you can risk losing control.

With STI my hands can always be in the same place. I can shift, brake, steer and jump all at the same time (if I wanted to). I don't need to release my grip, twist my wrist sideways, extend my thumb and lunge.

I have still got thumbshifters on two of my bikes - mainly because they're running 6-speed XT.

I voted push pull , but Dual control have a lovely feel to them .

My setup isnt an option

Original 92 XC Pro thumbshifter operating same vintage front mech so no annoying rubbing then current some few year old XT push pull shifter for easy to use indexing at the back without risking my hand flying off on descents although about to change to a push push sram as I prefer them

As a side note. On my Inbred I have an 8 speed XC Pro indexed thumbshifter mounted upside down underneath on the left side of the bars operating its front mech Looks really subtle if you ask me heh

Well its only got 1 front ring, the mechs more of a chain device

I would run single speed if thats what youre hinting at but my knees are buggered enough as it is lol

i lost count at 8 cables

why would a shifter be needed if theres only one ring ?

As a semi chain device because it has a useless weak spring'd shimano rear mech and I use it for bumpy downhill thrashing so it helps keep the chain on plus get it back on when its off, also I hate rubbing front mechs so theres a bit of adjustment there. Not sure what you mean by the 8 cables, only has 2 and the rear mech one is a single piece of outer all the way from shifter to mech. The disc hoses are black which may be confusing you heh, plus it no longer has a poploc on as I never used it

I'm a bit conflicted about this, really. Taking all things into consideration, I'd have to say thumbshifters - I like the simplicity, the ease of operation, reliability, and being simpler to maintain - they really have longevity on their side, and that's a big plus for me.

For pure operation and use, I'd go with push / pull STIs, although I did all my off-roading with push / push STIs.
