Shellac for Cotton Bar Tape

Just wondering if there's a cheap ready mixed equivalent?

I've seen shellac flakes but the smallest quantity seems to be 250g, probably enough for 50 bars!

I only need enough for one set of bars has anyone got any recommendations?

I can't help directly, but try a furniture restorer/French polisher.
They use it in many of the polishes etc.

I have used Mylands Superfine White polish. After 10 (ish) coats it looks pretty good. It does darken the colour of the tape.

I got some from B &Q for around £7...

As a mattter of interest, was the shellac added originally for some practical purpose...such as waterproofing the cloth tape or such?
Or is it a to give new bars and tape that worn shiny, aged patina look?

Excuse my ignorance...I only go back as far as early 80s sky blue Benotto or white leatherette Bike Ribbon.

Its mainly just to protect the tape and stop sweaty dirty hands staining the tape but also a bit of waterproofing won't harm
