Setting up front and rear mech’s

Drag in the cable is always an issue.

I always use shimano 5mm

Smooth curves, quality inner and outer, open out the nylon liner before fitting, avoid those ferrules with the long nose.

Locate the cable inner into the clamp correctly. 👍

Mech position looks good👍
-outer cage parallel to the outer ring, around 2mm above -

Cage looks unbent👍

But I think you're missing the cable clamp washer, that actually pushes the cable further from the pivot point, so makes cable pull to mech movement correct.

A lot of novices tuck the cable under the tab of the washer - it's missing here! So the cable is in the wrong position.

Another slight problem is you haven't got shimano rings - you're missing the pickup pins.

This makes quite a difference in front indexing.

Ok thank you, are the cable clamp washers easy to get on eBay or somewhere?

You can get the part number from shimano techdocs - it's no3 in that picture in my previous post.
I doubt it's still available.
We keep that sort of item in a little drawer

Actually I’ve got a few old front mechs kicking around I’ve possibly got one that will fit. Will have a look in the morning

Also do you recommend crossing the gear outers at the front and the inners under the downtube like this?

Crossing the cables means the inners are exiting the outers at an angle, increasing friction.
Best avoided if you're struggling to get a good shift.

I also wonder if your bb is too long - this puts the statistics too far out and affects the cable pull to movement.

Tbf front mech setup is surprisingly challenging, especially if you don't have perfect groupset match inc bb and chainrings.
I often describe it as
a 4- dimensional problem.🥸

I bet if you had m950 chainset including rings, right length bb, unbent front mech (including the tab washer) and shifter, and new, smoothly routed cables, it would have been easy!🤣

We've got loads of customers just get us to do the front mech setup, triple. They do everything else themselves.
