Semi integrated to external cup headset possible?

I was fettling a build for a mates son and needed to swap the headset. It's semi integrated and so the bearing cups can come out, which I've done, and replaced with a 1 1/8 sealed version Vs the cages one on there.

I kind of want to upgrade the forks, and tapered seems to be the only real option.

When removing the cups from the frame, I noticed a step/seat for the internal cups. This was literally the depth of the cup. Would an external cup lower race miss this step and seat on the head tube past it, or am I stuck looking for a fork with a 1 1/8 steerer and the cups I have?

Pretty sure you can swap the inset headset to use external cups. I stupidly got one not checking my part numbers that I thought would fit a 1 1/4 tapered. If it suits your needs, I'll make ya a smokin' deal.

Thanks, I may try one out. A king is far too good for the carerra frame though. But I do have other builds......
