I use one of those ABUS motorbike U-locks. It's bloody heavy.

Sounds bad-ass

Do you to need to leave your bike out overnight?

I sometimes have to leave it out all day in dodgy areas of Leeds. I normally use my old Holdsworth hack which no one would want to nick in a million years, but if I have to take one of my other bikes I'd rather have spent £200 on the lock than have to spend thousands on another bike. I know every lock can be broken but it gives me piece of mind to know they'll have to work hard to get the bike.

Not so long ago a guy was selling his lovely klein attitude on egay as he had looked it with three locks and some t*at had tried to crow bar one of the locks open.......it had dented the top tube and down tube so they looked like a tin can that has been kicked around the street.....

what a mess

It is not even safe to leave some bikes when they are locked.....

State of afairs I am afraid

I use an ABUS D lock, the model with the square section D which means to cut it off you have to make 2 cuts as apposed to 1 cut and rotate on circular section locks.

I also use a heavy ABUS chain with built in lock.

Additionally I often carry a small cable that I secure the saddle with.

All in all around £200 worth of locks, and I still dont feel safe leaving it in london.

I bought a modern GT avalanche recently ( parts only) from a guy who had moved to a crack head infested area, he had attached the bike to a frame bolted and cemented to the wall and then secured with a variety of chains, d lock etc, the theif after spending some time it seemed tring to chisel the frame from the wall, got frustrated and put the chisel through the bike frame in two places on the rear stays just to ruin it and because he couldnt have the bike, he then preceeded down the road where he smashed 3 car windows again just out of anger and badness

an unsecured front or rear wheel is a bag of smack to these guys and they dont give two fooks whether it is a low end gt or boutique irreplaceable bike the steal

.

When they are in the shed(which they are most of the time  ) my bikes are locked, via a 4 metre cable, to my ground anchor which i use for my motorbikes.
You can only really use them effectively if you have a shed with a concrete floor.
Mine is a 2ft length of scaffold pole with 4 bits of m10 threaded bar drilled through the bottom at various angles and a 3tonne lifting eye welded to the top.
Concrete the bottom 12" into the shed floor leaving a really secure place to lock your bikes too ;)

my bike is about 3 foot away from me, its leaning against the wall near my bed! a very safe place to keep it, i also have it insured!

locks

got one bolted to the wall with a motorbike lock, then rest are locked to each other with abus d locks and cables.

most of the family work for ADT alarms so the place is like fort knox, not to mention the want to beat thieving scum to death with a rusty appollo
