Securing shed?

Hey there

Just moved into a new place for university and we have almost three grand's worth of bikes in a shed which has hinges you can remove with a screw driver... Got a ground anchor and a 120dB alarm to lock to, but it's pretty tricky to get your bike out if someone has locked theirs in front of it.

Would prefer to spend some time making the door more sturdy. Any tips? Was thinking two more bolts top and bottom so that the door can't be removed and opened outwards.

Ideally use coach bolts with very large repair washers on the inside to spread the load. At the very least use those security screws that only go in not out. Ideally your hasp will close so that it covers all fixings. If you can drill the base and install a secure tie down with chemical fixings if possible.

Alternatively keep your bikes in a secure location elsewhere and use a beater or sleeper.

Internal hinges would have been better, the type you fit when the door is in the open position.

I think their called butt hinges.

The coach bolt is a good idea but you cant always get access to all of the bolt ends.

Well you have! It's a shed. If they want in, its not a problem is it. It's about noise and inconvenience. Alarms on door not bikes are better for same reason.

I think your insurance will run a mile if they see bikes of that value in a shared shed especially if it is ramshackle.

If you're in a town, the simple answer with securing bikes of that value in a shed is DON'T. Doesn't matter how well you secure the door, if someone wants to get in they can pull the wall out with a hammer.
