SDP, Flats or combination - the mind numbing pickle.

I've still got no Pedals on my RC 200 an it's killing me, what the funk do I go for?

I'm looking at Shimano DX, because I want to be able to use SPDs for XC but I don't want to clip in if I'm legging it down the shops or dicking about in the park.

But all the DX seem to have raised cleat mechanisms, which surely makes it uncomfortable in your trainers? The only truly flat combo pedals I can find that look any good are Shimano A530s?

What you reckon? Suggestions / options por favor.

Many thanks
Boothy.

Use normal SPD's, and get those plastic click in thingies that allow you to nip to the shops in trainers.

What about Crank brothers smartys or candys? Unless they need to be shimano these are fantastic. I have a pair of smartys and can jump on the bike for a cruise or to the shops whilst the clipless side is second to none imo.Lots of varieties and colours on ebay with them now coming fitted to many bikes. So much so I'm waiting for another pair to arrive, a rather pimpy white pair with red springs. Not many bargains to be had though.

Hmmm, if only I had the wonga for another bike.... maybe in a few months. So do the Smartys go totally flat on one side? Or do you always have to balance your foot on the cleat springs?

I'm with tallpaul here, you can build a runabout bike for not much at all and it saves all the hassle of pedals/lights/mudguards etc plus it doesn't risk your main bike getting nicked. Also I've had bikes stolen in the middle of the night where all they took was the bike - its obvious they must have seen me around town on a bling bike and followed me home to find out my addres - so nowadays the only bike I'm seen on locally is my shabby shop bike.

Agreed.

BITD when I used to race, I had a hack/training bike that never got washed, had sh1tty mudguards lights etc, that I'd leave in town and not care if it got nicked.....although it didnt because it looked sh1t!!!

DX SPDs (the red ones anyway) are indeed rubbish with trainers.
The problem for me isn't popping to the shops (always another bike to take!), but the technical / downhil / large chance of falling off bits of offroad rides.
I prefer flat pedals for 'messing about' riding, & spds for long rides, but it would be great if the DXs really worked when not clipped in...

yep! never take the shiney bike out to places where you have to lock it and leave it.

i got paranoid after my muddy fox courier comp got stolen from college in 1991, 4 locks! bastads! :(

never let anyone you don't want to see your bike see it!

know what you mean about the pedal thing though, i'm lucky coz i have several bikes with different types of pedals so i can jump on whatever is convienient but if it's one bike only i'd buy 2 pairs of pedals, 1 flat, 1 spd, i'm not suggesting that you swap pedals from spds to just nip to the shops but i always find any spd type pedal (i use egg beaters and spds) annoy me when in normal shoes but i tend to change pedals on my bikes depending what i'll be doing. :?

the 530 pedals your talking about though aren't bad but they are blinkin ugly! i'd prefer them to the 324's though. the 530 looks like it's function massively before form! not always a bad thing though.
