Scottish Retro Bikers

I did the S.C.U.M.B. races from the early to mid nineties. Still got my old race number somewhere. Never once troubled those placing at the top of the sport category of course, being somewhat of a middle of the field rider.

I'm not really the type who would normally be into races but they were a great way of getting to blast round a pretty good course without worrying about dog walkers et al. Because of this, once the seven stanes centres were set up my "racing" fell by the wayside.

Good to see the MacRetro list getting longer. :D

Yeah Robin/Phil used to have pretty good sales

Phil passed away suddenly a year or so ago of a heart attack. he was only 43 :(

Yorkshireman been living in Scotland since 1986.

Did pretty much all the Scottish race series in the early 90's (mid field finish seniors/sport class)

Rode Pace RC200, Proflex 750, Stumpy, Xlite Ti.

Did the Grundigs at Aviemore (remember those river crossings!), a very muddy Strath Peffer and the rocky Sidlaws. Also followed the wife's glory road on the NPS downhill, but stayed home when she went to Vail in 94. I still wear her tee shirt though; how sad is that!

Used to shop extensively in Edinburgh, sometimes we took the tandem across and toured the bike shops in style. Happy days.

Now gone fairly modern, but still have the Xlite Ti, and an M800 Cannondale tandem.

I'd hate to have to race again. I think we stopped just at the end of the golden age when races were less formal and low key.

cheers all

 There's going to be a squad of us going to SSUK '09 if you fancy. Atmosphere's meant to be much more relaxed and just how we remembered those halcyon days of early XC racing. You and your good lady could maybe singlespeed your tandem, I'd love to see that. :D

Im Working on a 1989 Offroad Master,
she used to belong to a Scottish rider called Andrew Wright -

I rode with (and raced) Andrew a good many times - although he always pissed on me it has to be said.

A great guy and it was always a pleasure to head out on the trails above Inverness with him, Stuart McPhail and Gadge.

I used to ride for Alpine Bikes and had a Trek OCLV the same year that Andrew rode for trek.

 Aye, I could just see that! We used to race the tandem (a Gary Fisher Gemini back then) in the fun races in the morning to give the dog a run, then do our 'proper' races afterwards, then the downhill on the Sunday.

I have just built a SS 29er and ride it more than the other bikes, but don't think my old and by now, very skinny legs, could cope with a tandem SS. Contary to expectations riding tandem off road is much harder than singles. You get non of the advantages of a tandem and all the difficulties of extra weight and wheel base. The fire roads are okay, but eveything else is a struggle for control.

We did the Kielder endro (Sport Age) on the tandem and had a great day out, but used all the gears we had ;)

Agreed velo

Maybe we should be thinking ahead to the new year and arrange a meet early January and central to everyone. It would be good to get as many of us together as possible.
