Savoury Energy Food??

Can anyone recommend anything savoury and gluten free for use on the bike? After a long ride I'm just about gagging with the amount of sweet things I'm ingesting! I saw an article about rice balls in a cycling mag a couple of months ago, but I think that the mag (The Comic?) has been recycled by my better half!

Any suggestions, folks?

Sushi.

But seriously...

white flour has the same fast acting carbohydrate as table sugar but isn't sweet. So eat anything made with white flour (I believe you have gluten free products in the uk) i.e. Pastry, bread, savory biscuits etc try to avoid high fat until after the ride as this will slow down speed of the carb uptake. After the ride eat carb and protein combination (a cheese sandwich for example) to replenish glycogen used up on a long ride (over a couple of hours) stored in muscles and liver. Make your own savory oat cakes, eat an apple (about 20% carb) or an orange, peeling an orange whilst riding is a great skill :D

I'm an insulin dependent diabetic so have never eaten sweet things and don't have a problem with energy/glucose derived from savory food on a ride.

hang on, let me get this straight, is someone here suggesting that cornish pasties are NOT the ideal mid ride snack ?????

Baked potato, slice in half and sprinkle with salt, put it back together and put in your pocket. Even keep your back warm on cold days.
