So it turns out after visiting my buddy at his bike shop that not only is the crank set not original, (which I knew) but it is a 9 speed and didn't fit properly, it was sat slightly too far out from the frame so the front mech was stretching to get the chain on to the big ring.
The steering tube had a quill stem adapter on it to fit the later stem that was on it, this can be re-used depending on what sort of stem I go with.
And finally, some flaky bits of rust fell out of the frame when the BB and the forks were taken out... not so good!
Back to my boring droning on about re-spray; has anyone had an old frame dipped and galvanized at a metal refurbishers (non-bike specialists), and is this possible? Are there any issues over warping or anything?
(excuse my naivety and possibly silly questions, its school time for me with this stuff! Like learning about it though
