Saracen Eiger - 1989/1990

Dirt Disciple
Hello everyone, been on this forum for a while now and thought I'd actually post a brief history of my bikes (the ones I have photos of anyway).

My dad gave me this bike when I got tall (only just) enough at senior school, don't know how long he had it for. I must of been given it when I was about 13 so in 1996 possibly maybe. He defintely had it for quite a few years prior to me getting it.

I remember it had all Shimano LX groupset, including the hubs, gears, and brakes, etc. I think the frame and forks were steel.

And if I remember correctly, the cable routing for the rear brake went inside the top tube. It had Tioga grips (not sure if they were original). I remember buying a jelly seat cover for it and a pair of Panaracer Dart tyres, front and rear specific from Halfords and loved them.

Look at the size of the stem! I used to take this down the local dirt jump tracks and everything haha.

You lot will hate me for this and so do I, but eventually it ended up down the dump around the year 2000 when I got an old silver Saracen Sahara given to me by my cousin, with aluminium frame and Stratus suspension forks with about 1" of travel.

I've just remembered something else...

The Shimano LX shifters were rapid-fire, but the up-gear and down-gear levers were both BELOW the handle bars. So you controlled all shifting with your thumbs by pushing forwards.

Can anyone help with the year?

Ooooh, a Montego with primer coloured arches.

Well. The Sierra Saphire came out in late '89 and your bike was about the same year.

Prob a 1990 model sold in late '89.

off topic, I had a similar spliffy / eclipse jacket

I had a sweat shirt with the same chap on it. Thought it was ace and wore it until it fell apart. Used to to to Jean Junction in Keighley to look at the Eclipse gear after I'd been down to Aire Valley Cycles to perv at the Orange content.

Back on topic, Looks like a 1990 to me.

Cheers for the replys.
I'll put it down as 1989/1990 then!

It's good to know that the Spliffy trend wasn't just for us lot around here lol. I remember owning a Yo Boy jumper aswell haha.

Everyone else used to wear Cookie Jar jeans, and other similar types of baggy jeans. I never caught onto them though.
