Salmon 753: Freuler head tube?

I'm probably going to buy this Daniel Salmon fast randonneur this weekend, only fly in the ointment is this big Freuler style head tube.

Anyone ideas to it's purpose/how it affects handling? The seat tube is not extended in the same way, is it for stiffness? Gawd knows!

Tall head tube is old-man feature.
It allows a traditional quality quill stem like a cinelli 1A to be raised another inch or 2 - rather than having to use an embarrassingly cheap gooseneck, many of which are 4" taller.

Feel free to chop it off if you have a head tube reamer.
I've cut a few off and no- one ever noticed or complained.

It's the frame equivalent of a side stand. 🤣

yes on a frame that small, only used to allow a higher than normal stem position without looking too weird. On larger frames they're used to effectively lower the TT and help keep some stiffness in the frame (the largest steel colnagos are the most well known of these cases)

And then someone thought of the sloping top tube!

Truth be told, available lug angles forced the framebuilder's hand on this matter.
If you wanted the top head lug above the seat cluster by sloping the toptube, you'd need to fillet braze, as getting custom lugs cast would be killer expensive.

Top bombing! I've got a VAR headset reamer, but it looks like about an inch and a bit to cut.. Hacksaw and then the VAR?

You should be able to cut quite straight with a good blade and a line.
I usually use a cutting disc but the time saved over sawing is then more than lost on filing and facing.

If I take an inch off it I'll probably be able to run the forks ahead, no the of grief with quill stems getting stuck over the past decade 😲🤣

with this head tube you may find you need a stem with one cm or so longer extension than you employ on your other mounts
