Sachs Maillard Freewheel Removal Tool

Good Aftrenoon

We have a number of 27 inch rear wheels with Steel Rims, they often have a Sachs Maillard 5 Speed freewheel attached. To remove the freewheel, which I understand is called Sachs Maillard from various google searches a specialist tool is required that looks similar to a Shimano BB Removal tool.

As I cannot post pictures yet, you can search wiggle.co.uk for Shimano Bottom Bracket Removal Tool and you'll see what I mean.

The internal diameter of the freewheel is similar to the Shimano tool but the spline spacing is different. If anyone can point me in the direction of where to obtain such a tool that would help.

Thanks in advance

You will need I think a 24 spline sachs/Maillard/Atom/.Normandy freewheel remover.
ebay has a few available from USA or Bulgaria.

That's Great Thanks

Found on EBay as Item 130765624243 from the States which looks like what we need. Unfortunately it's a bit expensive so if anyone knows where to get one cheaper that would be really helpful :)

Every older and established LBS (local bike store) with a workshop should have the appropriate tool. Maybe five or ten bucks in the savings box and you probably should have the opportunity to use that tool.

I'll keep an eye out but best double check its 24 splined you require, there are other freewheel removers of the splined variety out there beside shimano and even they have more than one type

Found this on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Freewheel-Remover ... B004YJ3BVS

THAT'S GREAT. Although I don't really like dealing with amazon it's cheaper than EBay and now we can recycle those Freewheels as many of them seem good quality. It is 24 Spline on the internal so looks like the right one.

You seem pretty knowlegeable, are you in the business or a serious cycle fanatic ?

;)

Dont go for the one I've linked on Amazon, it might be 22 splined, another variant, the website does not specify !!!

The Supplier VAR does have the Sachs Maillard type but they're pricier and USA based. A link to VAR is on the Amazon link.

Try asking on the CTC site if anyones got them or even in the road bike wanted section of Retrobike.

As for my knowledge its just acrued through years of interest in all things bike hence my sig Velomaniac ;)

Always learning and always prepared to be wrong :D

Thanks for the Info. I've purchased it now and I'll let you know whether it's 22 or 24 splined when it arrives. If it's 22 it'll come in handy anyway and I'll get back to the drawing board....

Hopefully the latter ;)

VAR has been delivered but not a lot of use and far lighter and poorer build quality than Park, or Pedros
"Freewheel remover for Regina, Zeus and Atom"

No use for Sachs Maillard freewheels, but on the plus side the USA manufacturer listed on EBay on the thread above has said they'll send me one and not charge shipping
