Rust inhibitor for frames?

I was busy trying unsuccessfully to save myself a couple of hundred quid yesterday, with my central heating pump in pieces in front of me when I read the recommendation about adding an inhibitor to the water. Makes sense I suppose, I thought, before refilling the system with none. The other guy can do that tomorrow.

There are some lovely steel bikes on here that have suffered from internal corrosion. Has anyone tried using Waxoyl or an equivalent on the tubes of their bike? I guess you'd need to be sure you'd got rid of any corrosion first?

I use an additive we have at work which is sprayed onto raw metal parts.
Tetracyl I believe its called. It goes on wet then waxes up.

Another trick is old engine oil.

If I had to buy something then I would use waxoyl in a spray can.

Rust itself is a fairly good inhibitor. Wouldn't worry too much about clearing every last micron of rust out before treating your internals. There is no way other than dipping to get to it all anyway.

I splash old oil over our 4x4s, though one had been waxed lately. I blast up any hollow areas with water to get all the crud out, dry in a heated garage and then inject with thinned oil.

The main thing is stopping the air/moisture getting to it.

You want full penetration.

JD Weigl framesaver is another favorite, but not cheap.
...but definitely cheaper than a new frame!

Dinitrol do a rust converter and also a cavity wax, both available in aerosol cans, and are just as good on your car as on your bikes.

I've just used Dinitrol Converust RC900 on an old frame. Apparently it converts rust to a stable compound so it won't get worse and turns any rusty areas black. You can get it with a 60cm long flexible hose that squirts out the size so its easy for getting inside tubes. It was recomended to me by a guy who's spent a lifetime restoring and preserving classic cars. I got mine at Amazon.

To protect against new rust I've just bought some Bilt-Hamber Dynax S50 anti-corrosion wax. I've not tried it yet but Chas Roberts Cycles reckon its better than JP Weigle framesaver, and its cheaper and easier to buy.

Hammerite Kurust is cheap and effective. It will prevent rusted areas from deteriorating further. Seal a tube, pour some in and slosh it around for a while until satisfied that all the inside is coated. Repeat on all tubes.
