Running magura's on water?

Call me daft, but I'm curious as to why you'd want to do this?

The proper (ish) fluid isn't exactly pricey after all....

General concensus of opinion is that 'feel' is more 'direct' but that would just be because water is runnier than oil so flows quicker. Doubt it actually makes a blind bit of difference in a sealed system?

Of course it would make a difference the viscosititys are miles apart. Take a maccy d's straw drink some coke through it easy then try sucking a milkshake. there are still norrowings inside the system for the fluid togo through so a runnier liquid will flow more easily.

do you think the person who decided this was a good idea also tops up his car brake fluid with water?

It may work because of the lower pressures & lower level of strain on the system but I would always use the fluid designed for the system rather than risking going beak first into a tree at 25+mph!


There must be a fail point of water vs fluid in a braking system, it may be above 'normal' useage but why risk it?

While we are on the subject, if anyone is still running cable brakes i've got some really heavy duty fishing line to sell you that works really well on canti's instead of brake cable. :roll:

Jax its nothing like car brakes. The reason car brakes and the like use brake fluid is because of heat build up. I very much doubt rim brakes are every going to be glowing red do you? :roll:

you see... some charlatan is already selling people fishing line as bake cables!



back to the water thing, if you used water in the sealed system that still needs fairly regular bleeding (hence leaving air spaces), surely you are opening up the possibilities of internal rusting over long periods of time (think about what could happen if the bike was unused for a few months in the shed through the winter.) once again, it may work but is it worth the risk?
