running 10 x 3 cranks with 9 speed gearing

I have run a 10 speed triple chainset and front mech on my 9 speed road bike for around a decade now. It all works fine.

Wow, didn't realise 10 speed had been around that long, but i have had my head buried in sand from around 1997 for a while now.

And yes, 2x front mechs have a shorter cage (as they only need to cover about a 12-15t difference, not 20t)
The curve on the outer plate will probably match a smaller ring too, and the mech might not have the required throw to get across three rings.

i have a 2x 10 speed front xt mech that came from a guy on here
would it be possible to use that with a 3x xt shifter with 1 extra click?

im wondering if it would be ok to use a
22 an 32 ring combo an 9 speed chain an 9 speed rear cogs
with that front mech without issues

i think i have got a 3x xt to fit the frame if the 2x wont fit but id rather run 2x9 :)

Re:

I'm running a 2X9 setup on 2 bikes , 22, 36 with no probs , both using older shimano front mechs (one XT and one LX), 9 speed chain and cassette , 3X9 X0 and X9 shifters and just adjusted the front mech stop .

yeah that works bud but ive got a 2x xt here that came with the frame
was wondering if its ok with 22 an 32 rings i think it should be ok

the 3x xt i have in bottom pull an that frame 31.8 has been rattle can spryed :(

You can use 3x shifters/mechs on 2x chainsets. And 2x mechs with 3x shifters.
Only sticking point is 2x mechs on 3x chainsets (think the 2x shifters are simply 3x shifters with a switch moved?)
Some combinations might need a bit of fettling to get them to work better, bit of cable fiddling, stop screws, moving the mech down the seat tube a bit etc.
I've had 3x9 shifter running with a 2x10 front mech on a 10 chainset and 9 speed everything else. I race on that.
Also a 3x10 shifter (no switch) with 2x10 everything else. Wife races on that.
3x9 shifter, 2x10 front mech, 9 speed double chainset (SLX trail IIRC) that all works...........

There are a couple of other sets i've had working as well.

ah wicked stuff matt cheers :)

a few months ago on my 1x9 the chain came off towards the inside where the granny ring would be an got stuck :(

but my chain came off towards the peddle for the 1 time the other day
i was just slowing down when because the lights turned red
an it really spooked me out as i had just been hammering it before that

i am running a medium rear mech which has been mostly ok
(dont wana spend on a short1)

but i was going to get a tensioner or a bash guard etc
an then i seen the prices of them
, i heard other folk are using an old front mech instead

but as this bike will soon be retired to a commute an shopping only stead when my xc bike is back in service i think 2x9 could well be the best option for it :)
