I was thinking about one for a buid a while ago. The cheapest were from a seller in Australia. Yes they cost a lot but you'd get a big chunk back if you sell it on.

Hi, I have two Rohloff powered bikes and a third one for my GF and would never go back to mechs, yep they are expensive, bought my first from Rody when the dollar was low (700 euro for a new one with disc) second one for 600 in Holland (new with disc) and the last one for my GF for 50 euro   second hand and bit damaged at the outside but still going 100%
these things rule imho

...are they heavy...

They're not much heavier than an XT drivetrain. They will seem heavier because all the weight is concentrated in one place.

Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 CC 2002 32H 2316 g red; w/ bellows, rear 1/2s of cable joints, w/o oil: 1740 g, assembly: 576 g Correct or complete this entry
Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 DB OEM 2003 32H 1960 g 1985 g +1,28% hub + grip shifter (w/out cables), colour???

average cassette rear hub is like 350g? another 300 for the cassette, 250 for the rear mech, 150 for the front mech, say 150 for the 2 chainrings, bit more for the shifter and cable you have about 1250g vs 2000ishg min for the rohloff. if you have a vaguely light drivetrain youre probably talking about a kilo of extra weight all in one place i reckon. although good thing is you do get 14 different gears for about the same weight at a shimano 8 speed.
my suggestion, save yourself a packet, grow some leg muscles and go for a sram p5

The Rohloff is not only lighter than an Allfine or SRAM geared hub but also much, much stronger and way more durable, you can't honoustly compare a Rohloff with any other geared hub at market for now (talking serious off road use here)
Yep, the hub is heavier than a "normal" set up with mechs, but the weight at the back wheel is not as bothering as one (incl. me ;)) would expect. I can live with the extra weight, but if you're a pro fighting for first places in a race the Rohloff might not be your choice. When you just want to have trouble free fun on a MTB........ start saving :D
