they were rough so a lot of sanding and polishing then i tinted the first lacquer coats to get the gold colour then just went to normal clear coat to finish the last few coats
to be fair i think this is why you never see a good set of them as coating straight onto a polished surface is never the best idea

Here is the NOS boxed one; it has been stored in this box for years and never put on a bike. The gold legs have also turned the jenky mottled green. Does anyone know why the surface finish fails in this manner?

i think its the nature of magnesium alloy buddy lacquering a bare metal is just bad practice must be the magnesium as ive seen a lot of just alloy frames lacquered that seem fine and have stood the test of time

Even new the legs started the get funky, we sent back a few pairs back in the day as straight out of the box they were a bit off.

What brand and color lacquer and tinting did you use? I will be refinishing my Mag 21 SL's soon (I'll do a thread on it) and was thinking about using the finish that wind instrument owners use for their trumpets, tubas, etc. I realize they're brass and not MG but I was planning on calling the manufacturer to ask for recommendations.

the thing is wouldnt brass be just lacquered buddy ? i will have a look see if i have any of the colour additive left

Have you used a special primer before lacquer ? If not I'm not sure of the result with the time... Apparently magnesium is really different than aluminium in results... Just my 2 cents. On other hands very nice results..
