they do certainly look amazing, performance however is a whole other story, apparently reviews are quite mixed given they cost something like £1,000 or am I wildly off the mark?

By all accounts they're a capable xc fork, it's just the price tag that seems to be the limiting factor...

The reviews I've seen seem to suggest they're a bit crap, especially when you can get SIDs that perform better for half the price.
Strange also that every other RS fork seems to be sold at way below rrp where as these don't.

There isn't a connection.
Except the original fork was a bit twangy, so is this one by all accounts. (A couple of RS sponsored riders have tested, and gone back to "conventional" forks)
I suspect it will either go through a major revamp soon, or die on it's arse.
As for £1000, you can get more travel, stiffer, lighter, better damping, change and /or any combination of the above (depending on how much change you want!), from a good number of alternative brands.........

From what I remember when they came out the RS1 name was along the lines of 'we started it all bitd, now we're doing it again'. Fail in that case.

It is, and the seals are always bathed in oil, win win.. Millions of motorbikes use upside down forks for some very good reasons, unfortunately when it comes to human powered bikes the weight and flexiness (due to tyring to keep weight low anyway) kind of outweighs the benefits.
Wasn't it something like 25 years since the original RS-1 was brought onto the market? so Rockshox were apparently "innovating" again?
