Roberts Phantom, the rebuild thread.

After sadly developing a crack in my seat tube I was forced to repair and respray the old girl.
I took this opportunity to tweak a few things, and as it’s really my only bike bar an old Bear Valley I thought I’d entertain you lot with an exciting build thread.
I’ve detailed the bike here before but for ref:

- it’s a full Max OR frame and fork, made for me about 35 years ago and have risen most weekends for all that time
- its not a standard Phantom in that I specced straight forks and a sloping tt just for aesthetic reasons
- components are a complete mix, based on what I like the look of for the most part
- as it’s regularly used it won’t look perfect but I’m trying to polish the bits up a bit before it’s back out there

I get the frame back this week, so I’ll update as things move on, but to get you started, this is where we began

Which after a lot of consideration led to Winston and Mario at Vaz getting involved.
Interesting development was that after having a Mavic BB fitted for all that time it had rubbed away a large part of the thread in the bb shell it must have been resting on.
So, a new bb shell went in too…
Whilst I was at it, I made a few other changes.

- Reversed the seat clamp
- Extended that clamp tube a little as it felt a little too short before
- Changed to a top pull front mech so I could lose the pulley that was suspiciously close to the original failure
- had a smidge of clearance added to the inside of the chain stay where is rubbed sometimes

I love it when you get to see the repair work that's done, Shows craftsmanship and the lengths you are willing to go to save a frame instead of just passing it by and letting it rot.

Well I did think long and hard about it.
When you see some of the complete bikes come up for sale it doesn't really make financial sense to do what I've done, but it's a bike for life for me so what can you do.
Re paint, that was a nightmare....

I won't bore you with the story, but in conclusion, it's basically the same, but without the purple at the rear as I never liked that.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to know the story. I have a Roberts' BD that's going to need a repaint at some point, and it'd be good to know about any potential pitfalls.
