This is not answering the man's question.....

You are all correct but travel on Shimano road and MTB mechs is not the same.

Both are dialed to work well in MTB groups OR Road groups. I have to deal regularly with shop mechanics (I am tech support for Shimano Denmark) who can't get Road STIs to work with MTB mechs and vice versa. Shimano make a flat bar shifter for triple road mechs BECAUSE MTB shifters are not compatible.

Campag front mechs are virtually identical with Shimano road mechs. So the same is PROBABLY true. Have previously run Shimano road front mechs in Campag setups.

Correction

Travel on Shimano road and MTB front mechs is not the same.

If all other variables (chain line etc) are spot on, you might get it to work.

But don't expect it to.

All points made about REAR mechs are spot on.
